It was Leo Tolstoy, the renowned Russian author, who brought to the notice of Mahatma Gandhi the existence of a work called the Thirukkural in 1908. For reasons that cannot be explained here, the Russian intelligentsia have shown considerable interest in Indian literary and religion tradition. This is evident from the numerous websites meant solely for promulgating the distinct philosophical lineage India has produced. This naturally includes the Thirukkural also. Vithali Furniki’s 1991 translation of the Kural is available on the net in full. Of the five Russian translations published so far, one by D.V. Burba is a rendering of Rajaji’s English translation of the Kural. It is also available on a Russian website.
